Breast Asymmetry

Breast Asymmetry

Breast Asymmetry

More than half of the female population have asymmetrical breast development during teenage. A disparity in breast size is also common post-adolescence, with as much as a 15 to 20% difference between breasts, but this is usually not noticeable. However, there is a significant difference with one breast being noticeably larger than the other (asymmetric breasts).
It can have an enormous impact on a woman’s self-esteem and confidence.

How can the asymmetric breast be treated?

The aim of surgery is tried to match the two breasts in size, as closely as possible. This might entail making the smaller breast larger, or sometimes the larger one is made smaller. Surgery may therefore involve the use of an implant on one side in combination with lifting or reducing on the other side. The surgery will depend on your individual situation.

How long will I be in hospital for?

The procedure is carried out under a general anaesthetic and will require an overnight stay in the hospital before being discharged the following day.

Techniques

There are a variety of techniques. The choice will depend on whether to increase or decrease the overall breast size.

  • The augmentation of the smaller breast to match the larger one.
  • The reduction of the larger breast to match the smaller.
  • The use of different sized implants in each breast.
  • Or combination of the above.
